A Great “Kick-Art” to Summer!

Memorial Day weekend was a great kick-art to summer on Guemes Island (kick-art… kickstart, get it?)!

“Art for Sale” Spring Studio Tour a Success!

On Saturday, May 28th, Guemes Island artists opened up their studios yet again for tours and art sales. Many people ventured from studio to studio to help support our island artists and show their love for the arts. This has become such a successful event for our island artists that we plan to have 2 every year. Our next studio tour will be on the first Saturday of December (December 3rd)! Be sure to mark it on your calendars!

A huge thank you to all our participating artists and those who supported our artist’s. We are excited for December event!

Art Chairs

Old chairs need new life. Guemes Island Art Initiative has asked island artists to help transform an old chair into a new work of functional public art. Some of these art chairs made their debut at Celebrate Guemes, which was the the grand opening of our Schoolhouse Park stage.  They were a great addition to this beautiful event that brought our community together in celebration. View all of the creatively painted chairs HERE!

June Artist of the Month: Tom Hancock

Tom Hancock

What do blue jeans and wine barrels have in common? The obvious answer is nothing, but I’ve recently learned that’s not the case. The answer is Tom Hancock! In his professional life, Tom spent 25 years working for Levi Strauss & Co. and, to destress from long hours at the office, he turned to woodworking. Tom told me that he has always enjoyed working with his hands building, repairing, and creating “stuff”. “Working with wood has always intrigued me. It’s a flexible medium that can be made into abstract designs or functional items.” Read More…

Some upcoming fun “art holidays” happening this June are:

  • Yarn Bombing Day – June 11
  • National Sewing Machine Day – June 13
  • National Clay Week – June 13-19
  • Art Basel – June 16-19
  • National Camera Day – June 29
