“Celebrate Guemes” Cancelled

Out of an abundance of caution the Celebrate Guemes event will not happen as originally planned for September 4. A decision has been made to Delay and Reschedule in the future when Covid-19 risk has been reduced.

The planning team has been monitoring Covid-19 restrictions and rules that have been changing frequently, based on information from the following sources, the decision to delay has been made:

  • Washington State Department of Health has an indoor mask requirement and an outdoor public space strong recommendation for masks and distancing.
  • Island Hospital has asked that additional steps be taken to reduce possible exposure due to the high number of hospitalizations and overworked medical staff
  • Skagit County reports a dramatic spike in Covid cases to a very high level. They are making this a top priority and rushing to implement changes that include expanded testing and encouraging immunizations. The highly contagious Delta Variant is blamed on the sharp increase in illness. An increase in new breakthrough infections is being documented in Skagit County, even among those fully vaccinated. Additional steps should be announced soon.
  • Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations include increasing distance outdoors, especially on walkways and to avoid public gatherings.
  • Articles in both the Skagit Valley Herald and the Anacortes American reinforce the concerns that have been expressed by event participants about the risk of exposure in a community gathering.
  • Islanders also voiced concern about having more visitors on the island during a holiday weekend.
  •

Thank you for your understanding as this difficult decision was made. Thank you also for wearing a mask and helping to keep your friends and neighbors safe and healthy!  Unvaccinated and unmasked individuals put themselves and others at risk.
